What Are Cookies

Cookies are small text files, and similar technologies such as local storage and pixels, that a website places on your device when you visit it. They let the site remember your actions and preferences over time — for example, that you have already chosen your cookie settings, or how you arrived at the site — so you do not have to re-enter them on every page or every visit. They are a standard, near-universal part of how the web works, and they are not themselves harmful: a cookie cannot run a program, and it cannot read anything on your device other than the small piece of data it wrote itself. How We Use Cookies

We use a small number of cookies, grouped into the four categories below. Only the first is strictly necessary; the remaining three run only with your permission, which you give (or withhold) through our cookie banner and Cookie settings. Taken together, they let us keep the site working and secure, remember the choices you make, and understand — in aggregate — what is genuinely useful so we can make it better. We do not use cookies to collect sensitive personal data, and we do not sell any cookie-derived information to anyone.

Strictly necessary cookies

These cookies are essential for the website to work and to honour the choices you have made. They include the cookie that records whether you have accepted or declined our cookies, so we do not keep asking you on every visit, and they help keep the site secure. Because the site would not function properly without them, you cannot switch these off in our systems.

Preference cookies

These cookies remember choices you make on the site — such as display settings and the mode you select in the Jargon Translator — so you do not have to set them again on every visit. They are about your experience, not about tracking you, and they do not identify you personally.

Analytics and performance cookies

These cookies tell us, in aggregate and anonymised form, which pages are popular, how long people stay, and what they search for in the translator. We use this information only to understand what is useful and to improve the site. They do not identify you personally, and we prefer aggregated, anonymised measurement over following individuals around the web.

Marketing cookies

We do not currently use advertising or marketing cookies. If that ever changes — for example, if we begin measuring the reach of our own campaigns with a marketing cookie — we will update this policy and ask for your consent before enabling them. Declining marketing cookies today therefore costs you nothing and changes nothing about how the site behaves.

The Cookies We Set

Some third-party services (such as analytics providers or embedded content) may also set their own cookies when you use the site. Those cookies are governed by the third party's own cookie policies, and we do not control them. Where a third party processes data outside the UK or the EEA, we rely on the same safeguards described in our Privacy Policy and in the next section.

Managing Your Cookies

You are in control. When you first visit, our banner lets you accept all cookies, reject the non-essential ones, or open Cookie settings to choose exactly which optional categories you allow. You can change your mind at any time: open Cookie settings — there is a link in the footer of every page and another one right here — or scroll to the bottom of this page, where the footer link lives again. You can also control or delete cookies through your own browser settings; doing so may mean some parts of the site behave slightly differently, but the site will still work. Necessary cookies, as explained, cannot be disabled because they are required for the site to function.

Third-Party & International

Some of the tools that set cookies on this site are operated by third parties — for example, our analytics or hosting providers — and some of those providers may process data outside the UK or the EEA. Where that happens, we rely on the same legal safeguards described in our Privacy Policy, such as the EU Standard Contractual Clauses and the UK International Data Transfer Agreement, to protect the data. We do not permit our providers to use the cookies they set on our behalf for their own unrelated purposes.

Changes To This Policy

As our site evolves, the specific cookies we use may change. We will keep this policy updated to reflect that, and we will update the "Last changed" date at the top of the page whenever we make a material change. If a change is significant, we will draw it to your attention where we reasonably can.
